Book Of The Month

Johanna Bessing recommends Dracula Daily.

Dracula Daily is an online newsletter on Substack that sends out Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897) via email. The novel consists of a series of diary entries and letters spanning the period from May 3 to November 7, which are sent out to subscribers day to day so they can experience the story in real time. Because Dracula is in the public domain (i.e., it is old enough that intellectual property laws no longer apply), the newsletter is free and entirely legal.

Many of these entries follow the solicitor Jonathan Harker as he travels from London to Transylvania to meet Dracula and eventually discovers that he is a vampire. The original novel is not chronological, and thus, Dracula Daily will be a new experience for you even if you have read Dracula before. Even more interestingly, Dracula Daily went viral in 2022 and triggered the formation of an informal book club on Tumblr, with thousands of people becoming invested in the adventures of “their good friend Jonathan Harker.” The resulting mix of memes and genuine literary discussion was both fun and engaging, and with the hype from last year, this year’s run promises to be equally fascinating.

I would highly recommend that you subscribe to Dracula Daily (and perhaps even dust off your old Tumblr account and join in the discussion). This year’s run only started on May 3, so there’s still plenty of time to catch up!”
